Education and Honors
John earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Brigham Young University in 1999 in Sociology with a minor in Psychology. John received his J.D. degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in 2003. John is a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA), and a member of the Arizona Consumer Bankruptcy Counsel.
Legal Experience
Prior to joining the Firm, John managed his own successful bankruptcy law practice where he’s counseled more than ten thousand families regarding their finances and the stress that accompanies overwhelming debt. During his time in law school John, studied bankruptcy law under the Honorable Bruce Markell, as well as the Honorable Clive Jones, another bankruptcy judge in the District of Nevada. John is also certified as a Ramsey Solutions Master Financial Coach.
Personal Interests
John and his wife have six children. When he is not practicing law, John enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, following the BYU Cougar football team, where he, himself used to play guard on the offensive line for. John also enjoys coaching the offensive line for the varsity football team at Benjamin Franklin High School in Queen Creek, Arizona.
Over the years I have counseled with more than ten thousand families about their finances and the stress that accompanies overwhelming debt. And while many of the issues facing families in debt are the same, each family is different in what type of solution will solve their debt problems.
I am a bankruptcy attorney who doesn’t believe that bankruptcy is always the best option. In fact, in some cases, it might cause you more harm than good.
I take the time to meet with each client, learn about your situation, evaluate your case, and help you decide what the best path to becoming debt-free will best suit your family’s needs.
That is why in addition to my law degree I obtained additional training and become certified as a Ramsey Solutions Master Financial Coach. This certification is obtained through Dave Ramsey’s organization and I use the principles taught in Financial Peace University and found in Dave’s book “The Total Money Makeover: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness“.
Through my training as a Consumer Protection Attorney as well as a Ramsey Solutions Financial Coach, I can assist you in choosing the right course to get out of debt and obtain financial peace.
Law School
I first became interested in practicing bankruptcy law while attending law school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). It was there that I studied bankruptcy law under the Honorable Bruce Markell, a bankruptcy judge and nationally known expert in bankruptcy law. This unique experience was a tremendous opportunity to learn bankruptcy from a preeminent scholar and accomplished author in the field of bankruptcy.
Also while in law school I also served as an extern to the Honorable Clive Jones, another bankruptcy judge in the District of Nevada. Working with Judge Jones provided me with the opportunity to witness first-hand bankruptcy law in action as I saw the great relief bankruptcy can provide for those going through financial hardship.
Ramsey Solutions Master Financial Coach
In the world of personal finance, Dave Ramsey is a household name. I first became familiar with Dave’s work when my wife and I were driving from Phoenix to Salt Lake City as a young couple just starting out. I found his book “The Total Money Makeover” at a gas station while we were fueling up. We bought the book and on the long drive to Salt Lake City we took turns reading out loud (this was before audible/podcast, and even the iPhone!:). The principles and strategies he taught make a lot of sense to me and have been something my wife and I have tried to implement into our financial lives.
I recently became certified as a Ramsey Solutions Master Financial Coach. This is a certification that is provided by Dave Ramsey’s company after attending a vigorous training course designed to train financial coaches in the Dave Ramsey approach to eliminating debt and obtaining financial freedom.
I use the skills I obtained in this certification for both financial coaching clients (nationwide) as well as in my law practice (Arizona only) in assisting clients to not only eliminate debt but to solve their money problems once and for all.
Undergraduate Work
I graduated from Brigham Young University. While I was there I was fortunate to play football for the BYU football team. I played guard on the offensive line and am proud to have been a member of the inaugural Mountain West Conference championship team. The fact that this is the first thing I mention when discussing my undergraduate work should tell you a lot about where my time was spent. Football was a full-time job but I am proud to have graduated from BYU with a degree in Sociology and a minor in Psychology.
Professional Memberships
I am a member of the State Bar of Arizona and am licensed to practice before all state courts, the United States District Court for the District of Arizona, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
I am a member of the National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys (NACBA), and a member of the Arizona Consumer Bankruptcy Counsel. Why should this matter to you? I attend conferences through the year by these organizations that keep me up to date on the latest in court developments and bankruptcy trends nationwide. This means that I will be prepared to handle issues that may arise in your case. Bankruptcy law is a complex area of law that is continually changing. You need a bankruptcy attorney who is committed to staying up to date and fully understands the bankruptcy process.
Personal
I grew up in Utah and my wife was raised in the White Mountains of Arizona. My wife and I have six kids (yes, six!). Having a large family, I know that it takes a lot of work to keep the kids fed and a roof over everyone’s head. When I am not practicing law I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, following the BYU Cougar football team, and coaching the offensive line for the varsity football team at Benjamin Franklin High School in Queen Creek, Arizona.

If you're being sued by a junk debt buyer and you have the money to hire a lawyer, John Skiba is your go-to, get-it-done, incredible, and quick solution to your problem!!! And if you can't afford a lawyer to represent you at this time, at least let John give you guidance through an affordable consultation because even this service will put your mind at ease! My husband and I were unexpectedly and surprisingly sued by Unifund for a 'breach of contract' which was absolutely terrifying and intimidating to say the least. It was stressful beyond measure but we knew we had to fight. After almost a year of fighting them pretty much by ourselves, we hired John - and he and his office assistant Kate had the matter resolved within a week. You have rights! Don't be bullied by junk debt buyers. Get John and his law office on your side!!!
Kate, thank you so much for being as responsive and as responsible as you are! John would be lost without you. You made a world of difference with our experience by just staying on top of things and getting in contact with us and getting messages to John so swiftly!
Guys, if you're reading this, it must mean you need a lawyer. These people are friendly, responsive, kind, effective, efficient, smart, integral, available, honest, and ready to defend you! They exceeded our expectations in every way because even though they're out of Mesa, AZ., they still took our case in Sierra Vista. And we are so glad we went with them over anybody else around. This was absolutely the best decision we ever made in a case like this (which is our first and hopefully our last). My only regret is we didn't hire them sooner

Words can not begin to express the gratitude I have for John Skiba and his team. He worked on my case for over a year with persistence and attention to detail. I had taken out a private student loan with a company that went bankrupt years ago and was being harassed by a new company claiming to own the debt that amounted to far more than I originally taken out. I felt uncomfortable communicating with them and incredibly blessed I found and hired them. THE LAWSUIT WAS DROPPED! They are a team with integrity and prompt communication. This was the best thing to happen to me in months and I recommend them to anyone being haunted by greedy loan companies with false claims. John Skiba will fight for your rights and treat you with respect. Thank you again, Tasha

This guy is excellent, professional and ethical. Those are three qualities rarely found within the same lawyer. I actually trust this guy, and that says a lot.

As a Flight Attendant I was injured at work and was off for over a year. I accumulated a tremendous amount of medical bills and was so far behind. I needed a fresh start. John Skiba exceeded my expectations during the whole process. His entire team were always there for me. I am back flying again but if you find yourself in the same boat as I was, I highly recommend John Skiba and his team
